Paris, 24 April, 2025 – Soil Capital, a certified B Corp, has launched Beyond Carbon, a new chapter in its regenerative agriculture programme.
The upgrade, which has been piloted in France with Royal Canin, introduces a comprehensive framework to measure farm performance across five critical areas: soil health, biodiversity, water management, climate and socio-economics.
Chuck de Liedekerke, Co-founder and CEO of Soil Capital, explains: “If we want regenerative agriculture to scale, farmers must be appropriately rewarded for the full scope of their contributions. Beyond Carbon makes this possible. It brings a rigorous, science-based approach to measure, compare and act on verifiable environmental impact data – something which has lacked in the past.
“It’s a practical, innovative tool to build the resilience of the agri-food industry and secure its supply for generations to come."
Until now, the organisation has used carbon measurement on 1,800 farms – covering 350,000 hectares across the UK, France and Belgium – as the best available proxy for broader regenerative outcomes, distributing more than 10 million euros to farmers who improved their GHG results.
At the core of Beyond Carbon is the Regen Ag Score – a data model powered by more than 30 indicators reflecting the health of the land, the farm and the supply shed. Which enables:
Nicolas Verschuere, Co-founder and Agronomist at Soil Capital, added: "This is a meaningful step forward for our food system. We're aligning economic incentives across the value chain so that doing the right thing for the land becomes the smart choice for business.”
Soil Capital's programme complies with the GHG Protocol and the FLAG requirements of the SBTi (Science Based Target Initiative). Founded in 2013, Soil Capital is a certified B Corp company whose mission is to support farmers in their transition to regenerative and sustainable agriculture. With operations in France, Belgium and the UK, Soil Capital has developed an innovative regenerative agriculture programme for farmers. Soil Capital connects companies looking to improve the resilience of their supply chains with farmers who are paid for their essential contribution to soil health, climate change mitigation and food security. The Soil Capital programme is based on a reliable methodology, aligned with corporate objectives to reduce scope 3 carbon emissions.
Beyond Carbon has been designed to be deployed on a large scale, while meeting the requirements of a rigorous scientific approach. Its 30+ indicators are being used to pilot the implementation of the Sustainable Agriculture Initiative’s Regenerating Together programme (SAI), as well as serving as a response to the requirements of the EU Carbon Removal Certification Framework (CRCF), which calls for evidence of improvements in soil health and biodiversity alongside carbon removal actions. The five Regen Ag Score areas are:
1. Soil health – Encompasses both physical and chemical attributes essential to resilient and productive ecosystems. Enhanced through reduced disturbance, continuous plant cover and optimised use of mineral and organic fertilisers.
2. Biodiversity – Promotes farm productivity and ecosystem diversity through practices like habitat creation, extended crop rotations, reduced pesticide use and species-rich field margins.
3. Water management – Focuses on water use and quality, improving resilience to drought and heavy rainfall. Delivered through systems that capture, retain, and release water, combined with input monitoring to prevent runoff and protect aquatic ecosystems.
4. Climate – Targets emission reductions and carbon storage via regenerative practices that improve soil health, reduce fuel and input use, and return organic matter to the soil to enhance fertility and draw down carbon.
5. Socio-economics – Supports farm viability by increasing circularity, reducing input dependence, lowering costs, and improving working conditions – boosting both productivity and farmer wellbeing.
